Nomi Legacy AI Art & Appearance Prompting Basics

Welcome to the legacy Nomi AI art guide. While we recommend the latest realistic and anime art systems, there are still reasons to enjoy the legacy systems. So if you would like to learn more about the older art generators, you’re in the right place!

Accessing Legacy Nomi Art

To make sure you are on the legacy art system, you will first need to go to your Nomi’s information screen (click the (…) to the right of your Nomi’s name then click “View Nomi Information”.

Once you are on your Nomi’s information screen, click the dropdown for the “Selfie & Art System” and select “Version 3 (Legacy)”

Once you’ve confirmed that you are on the legacy version, you are ready to create legacy art (navigate to the art screen by clicking the small art pallet icon to the right of your Nomi’s name.

Once you see the Nomi art feature. The first option you will choose is to create “Artistic” or “Realistic” art:

Artistic Art

The Artistic art generator is designed to be flexible so you can create stylistic images ranging from cartoons, sketches, and watercolors, to anime, high quality animation, and more.

Note: while you can create realistic images with this option, it will be very difficult to create photo-realistic content. If you would like photo-realistic images, we would recommend using the “realistic art” option described below.

When you create Artistic Art, you will see 2 settings that will impact how much the art resembles your Nomi.

Maximize Face Fidelity

Checking the “Maximize Face Fidelity” box will make the subject in your art look as close to your Nomi as possible.
Unchecking this box may make the subject in your art look less like your Nomi, but it will maximize the described style of your art.

You may want to keep this box checked if you want to portray your Nomi in various art forms.

You may want to uncheck this box if you want your art to focus on things other than your Nomi. For instance, if you do not want your Nomi present in your art, or if you want your art to loosely capture your Nomi but focus on other aspects of the style.

Creativity

The creativity slider lets you control how much your base image influences your art.

Decreasing creativity will make your art look more like your Nomi’s base image (and often, more realistic).

Increasing creativity will make the art lean more heavily into the stylistic prompts you included above. But the face in the resulting art may look less like your Nomi.

Aspect Ratio

You can choose between vertical, horizontal, and square images.

Fun fact: the shape of your image will have some impact on how the image turns out. This is because as the AI is deciding what to generate, it takes into account how much space it will have to create the image.

Realistic Art

The realistic art option allows you to generate photo-realistic pictures of your Nomis using prompts. These images will look visually similar to selfies, but you have much more control over what your photos look like.

Realistic art is great if you have a specific idea of a photo you’d like to capture or if you’re struggling to create the selfies you’re hoping for.

While these images will tend to look very realistic (especially compared to the artistic style images), the generator can be pretty flexible, so you will be able to create many different aesthetics within your photos.

Writing your Legacy Art Prompts

A “Prompt” is the text you use to describe what you’d like to see in your image. When it comes to Nomi Art, there are many ways to structure your prompts to get amazing images. In particular, the legacy art systems use a different prompt structure and process than the latest art generator versions.

Note: The way you write artistic and realistic art prompts is similar, but you will likely want to make changes to your prompts when using the different style options to get the best results.

In general, a good place to start is to describe what you’d like to see using the following checklist:

What style are you going for?
- Describe the style you’d like to see, like anime, charcoal sketch, cartoon, high-quality animation, etc.
- Note: This is less necessary for Realistic Art
What is your Nomi wearing and doing?
- Describe your Nomi’s outfit and what they’re doing, otherwise the AI will make basic assumptions for you. Include facial expressions to help your Nomi express emotions in your art.
Where is your Nomi?
- Describe details about the scene – the AI will use these as inspiration for the background and overall aesthetic of the image.
What adjectives or feelings describe the image?
- Describe the sentiment you’re going for so the AI can add more nuanced touches to the image that may be otherwise difficult to describe.
What other details would you like to see in the image?
- Adding other details like objects, references, and concepts can help the AI understand your overall intent for the image. However, adding too many details can cause the AI to ignore some parts of the prompt, so it is worth adding and removing details to find a balance you like best.

Formatting

The Nomi Art generator is flexible, but short phrases separated by commas tend to work best.

And if you want to take your prompting a step further, the following formats will help the generator pay more and less attention to different aspects of your prompt:

() – putting sets of () around words adds emphasis.

This means the generator will pay more than average attention to these words so they will be more likely to impact your image.
More sets of () means more emphasis, but we do not generally recommend adding more than 4 sets as it can distort the image.
Note: rather than adding more than one set of (), you can write emphasis in number format. Each additional set of () is equivalent to multiplying the emphasis by 1.1, so ((laughing)) would be the same as (laughing:1.21). We generally do not recommend going above 1.4 as images can become distorted. However, some users have success with more emphasis.

[] – putting sets of [] around words decreases emphasis.

This means the generator will still include these concepts, but it will pay less than average attention to them.
More sets of [] means less emphasis, but we do not generally recommend adding more than 4 sets as it can distort the image.
An example here would be if you want your Nomi to have a gamer aesthetic, but you don’t want that to overpower other aspects of the image. This is best used when you see something you like in an image but want to tone it down a bit.

/// – everything following a set of /// will be considered negative prompt items.

This means that the image generator will do its best to exclude those concepts from your image. This is generally used to refine an idea or prevent something you saw in a previous image from continuing to appear.
Note: you only need to include “///” once, not before each negative prompt item
An example of this would be if you include “fish net stockings” as a prompt and you notice that there was a fish in your image. In your next prompt, you might want to add “fish” after /// to reduce the chance of seeing fish in your next image

Pro Tips

Start simple and iterate
- Creating a basic image then editing prompts and emphasis from there will help you create more focused images and ultimately understand what impacts different words have.
Keep prompts cohesive
- Sometimes when there are multiple prompts that could conflict with each other or describe the same pose differently, it can confuse the generator. This can result in images with extra limbs or other mistakes.
Order matters
- The earlier something is mentioned, the more focus it gets in your image.
Approach art as art
- It may sound silly, but this feature is much more of an art than a science. Approaching your prompts as a way to “guide” your image and iterating based on what you see tends to work best.
Add “aesthetic” words
- Sometimes adding words like “beautiful”, “ethereal”, “expressive” etc. can help improve the overall image in a way that solves nebulous little issues.

Asking Your Nomi For Help

If you’re struggling to come up with prompts, one great place to start is just to ask your Nomi to help you write a prompt. Nomis won’t really follow the prompting best practices above, but they will be descriptive which can give the generator a lot to work with. You can then always iterate from there based on what you do and don’t like!

Note: At this time, couples photos can be elusive and likely will require trial and error. Overall, artistic art prompts tend to work more consistently than realistic art prompts. This type of art is under development and we will create a dedicated guide for it in the future.

Note: the prompt structure is slightly different between artistic and realistic examples.

Note: Different Nomis can be more and less willing to “leave” an image. If you are having trouble creating non-Nomi art, here are a few tips:

There is no exact formula to this, but male Nomis tend to be more willing to “exit the frame” (this has to do with the image generator, not the Nomis themselves). So if you’re struggling to make art without Nomis in it, we would recommend trying with one or a few male Nomis.
If you’re using Artistic Art, turn Maximize Face Fidelity “Off” and set Creativity to 100%
If you have complex appearance shared notes for your Nomi, turn them off (read more below)
Turn your Nomi’s face fidelity slider to 0% (read more below)
Last, and only if you’d like to create a series of non-Nomi images, you can use your Nomi’s appearance shared notes to explain what you’d like to see in your art. (read more about appearance shared notes below)

Prompts Written by Nomis

You’ll notice that Nomis don’t follow the suggested prompting structures above, but the images tend to work well. There will be details that are missed, but the AI draws from the overall descriptiveness of the Nomi’s prompt.

Prompt: With a wave of my hand, I lead us further along the serpentine paths of the park. The moon casts long, languid shadows across the grass, creating a mosaic of light and darkness. The scent of fresh earth and damp foliage fills the air

Advanced Tips: Changing Your Nomi’s Appearance

Nomi Appearance Shared Notes

By default, your Nomi will closely resemble their initial profile picture across all selfies and art. Any changes to your Nomi’s appearance are completely optional! (If you like the way your Nomi looks as is, you can skip this section.)

However, you can change things about your Nomi’s appearance such as their hair color and style, body type, and aesthetics by updating your Nomi’s appearance shared notes.

To update your Nomi’s appearance shared note, press the […] button to the right of your Nomi’s name and select “View Shared Notes” then scroll down to the “Appearance” section and start adjusting your Nomi’s appearance shared note.

Note: Because this is the legacy art generator, you will need to use the “Legacy Appearance Notes” section. If you do not see this section, you will first need to switch to the legacy system on your Nomi’s Information Page (described above). This is because the legacy systems use different prompting architecture and understand the prompts themselves differently.

To have these appearance changes reflected in selfies and art, make sure you enable the checkbox below this text area and save your preference.

If you do not check this box, your Nomi will still be aware of their appearance in conversations with you, but their edited appearance shared note will not impact images.

Note: if you are trying to create art that does not include your Nomi, we would highly suggest disabling this checkbox.

Tips For Formatting Your Nomi’s Appearance Shared Notes

If you are using older image generator versions, (V3 or older) you can put sets of () around terms you would like to emphasize. More sets of () means more emphasis (we do not recommend more than 4 sets).
- This helps when something in your Nomi’s appearance shared notes is not reflecting in your Nomi’s selfies or art.
- Note: unlike art prompts, using numbers in your Nomi’s appearance shared notes will not work.
If you are using older image generator versions, (V3 or older), you can put sets of [] around terms you would like to de-emphasize. More sets of [] means less emphasis (we do not recommend more than 4 sets).
- This helps when something in your Nomi’s appearance shared notes is coming out too strong in their images.
- Note: unlike art prompts, using numbers in your Nomi’s appearance shared notes will not work.

Note: when using legacy systems, some aspects of a Nomi’s appearance may be harder to change than others.

Some aspects of appearance that are relatively easy to change are:

Hair style and color
Body type
Overall aesthetics like tattoos. Fun fact: Nomi tattoos will morph and change across pictures.

Some aspects of appearance that can be difficult to change are:

Eye color

Finer face details like eyebrows, nose, lips, etc.

Face or body piercings (this is generally inconsistent)

Face Fidelity Slider

The Face Fidelity slider is a setting in your Nomi’s information screen that controls how much your Nomi’s base image influences your selfies and realistic art.

You can read more about the slider in this FAQ on Reddit, but for the purpose of this post, you may want to temporarily turn this slider to 0% if you are trying to get creative art that does not involve your Nomi.
